Why We Need Our Pillow
~ Quick, think about your main pillow your head collapses on every night. Time now to read a few reasons why it’s a M.U.S.T. for you and me.
1 – Pillows help keep your head, neck, and spine in a normal position during sleep.
2 – Pillows keep you from waking up with neck pain.
3 – Pillows allow you to breathe easier and have improved circulation.
4 – Pillows are a necessity to hold all your thoughts.
What definition of a pillow do you prefer? Number four is mine.
While I was growing up, there was no staring at your phone or laptop before you decided to turn your brain off and fall asleep. And, having a TV in your bedroom wasn’t as common as it is now. There wasn’t as much stuff to hold and stare at that kept you from thinking totally on your own.
For me, going to bed meant my thoughts that weren’t able to pop up that much during the day would show up. More often than not, my pillow soaked those thoughts up night after night. And if I didn’t have to get up too quick in the morning, my pillow would start its new day holding more thoughts.
My pillow knew more about me than anyone else. After all, not all thoughts were worth telling my parents, siblings, or friends. It held all the happy and sad thoughts for years. When I was younger, my pillow knew what toys I wished my mom would let me get. And, as years went by, it knew who I had crushes on or what new clothes I wish my parents would let me wear. I’m certain my pillow wished it could shut my thoughts up for days after I got my driver’s license.
If it could, I’m sure it would have jumped for joy when I began putting many of my thoughts into my very first journal. Here’s an example of what my pillow was spared from.
March 8, 1980 (12 yrs old)
Today was boring. All I did was clean up around the house. Mom was at work and Dad and David were out of town. It was a pretty day, but totally blah. I didn’t do much of anything that seemed important. A day not to remember.
Why am I talking about my pillow? We all have pillows, so what’s the big deal?
The day I found out I was pregnant was the day my pillow began its toughest job. It began hearing all my thoughts that were consumed with guilt, embarrassment, worry, shame, regret, along with twenty million questions.
Every night, lights off, I was in my own little world, free to load all my thoughts and tears onto my pillow. Family and friends knew some of what I was thinking, but still, not nearly as much as my pillow. As each new day began, it would hear me think,
“I wish this was all just a dream?”
As I began writing my book, sharing all I went through with my unplanned pregnancy, I thought I’d title it My Pillow. However, about a year later, I couldn’t help but change the title
“God knew far more than anyone else what I was dealing with,” I thought to myself as I wrote. “Wait, God and my pillow knew all my thoughts. THAT’S IT ! I’ll make God and My Pillow the title. Perfect!”
I decided I wanted my readers to know who not only knew all my thoughts, but held me through the entire trial as well.
If you find a few more worries forming than you’d like, remember that God wants you to leave your worries to Him. He’s your Father who cares. Instead, think about how He’s the one whose plans are perfect as your head goes down onto your cozy pillow.
